In proportion to their size, the strongest animals are the larger beetles of the Scarabaeidae family, which are mainly found in the tropics. In tests these beetles were found to support 850 times their own weight on upon their back. As a comparison, in a trestle weight-lifting stance, a human can support up to 17 times his own body weight.
Rodger Kram, a physiologist at the University of California in Berkeley has tested the strength of the rhinocerous beetle and found that it could stand while carrying one hundred times its own weight, but walk with only 30 times its own weight.
