The longest species of grasshopper formally recognized to date is the giant jumping stick grasshopper (Proscopia gigantea), which has an extremely thin, elongate, stick-like body typically measuring up to 18 cm (7 in) but occasionally slightly exceeding this length. It is native to Brazil and elsewhere in South America, and is not only the longest species of grasshopper but the longest species within the broader taxonomic order Orthoptera (which also includes crickets and katydids).

There have been uncorroborated reports of a mysterious species from the border region of Malaysia and Thailand, which is said to measure up to 25 cm (10 in) long and be capable of leaping a distance of up to 15 ft (4.6 m). However, it is unclear whether any actual specimens of this species have been placed in scientific collections for formal documentation, so until this happens the record for largest grasshopper remains with Proscopia gigantea.
