Most jellyfish have a bell or body diameter ranging from 2 - 40 cm (0.8 - 15.8 in), but some species grow considerably larger. The largest is the Arctic giant jellyfish (Cyanea capillata arctica). An Arctic giant of the northwestern Atlantic washed up in Massachusetts Bay, USA in 1870 had a bell diameter of 2.28m (7 ft 6 in) and tentacles stretching 36.5 m (120 ft).
This particular jellyfish is also known as the Arctic lion's mane and is a predator which hunts its prey. However, it doesn't have to try very hard as many fish swim into its near invisible tentacles full of stinging cells which paralyze any unsuspecting victim. Its favorite food is fish, plankton and other jellyfish. Even though human beings must be careful of this type of jellyfish (its sting can be fatal) you probably won't come across it as it lives very deep down in the open ocean.
