The most famous canine rescuer of all time is a St Bernard called Barry. Barry rescued more than 40 people during his 12-year career on the Swiss Alps. His rescues included that of a boy who lay half frozen under an avalanche in which his mother had died. Barry spread himself across the boy's body to warm him and licked the child's face until he woke him up. He then carried him back to the nearest dwelling.
