The oldest land mammal (excluding man Homo sapiens) is the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus). There are a number of claims of animals reaching 80 years or more, but the greatest verified age is 86 years for a bull elephant named Lin Wang, who died on 26 February 2003 at Taipei Zoo, Taiwan. Certain whale species are believed to live even longer, although little is known about this. The fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) is probably the longest lived, with a maximum lifespan estimated at 90–100 years.
