The tallest mammal is the giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis), found in the dry savannah and open woodland areas of sub-Saharan Africa. An adult male giraffe typically measures between 4.6 and 5.5 m (15–18 ft) tall.

The tallest ever recorded was a male Masai giraffe (G. c. tippelskirchi) named George, received at Chester Zoo on 19 June 1960 from Kenya. Standing 5.8 m (19 ft), his horns almost grazed the roof of the 6.1 m (20 ft) high Giraffe House when he was nine years old. George died on 22 July 1969.
