The capybara or carpincho (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) of Central and South America has a head and body length of 1–1.3 m (3 ft 3 in–4 ft 3 in) and weighs 50–60 kg (110 lb 3 oz–132 lb 4 oz); females tend to grow slightly bigger than males.
This rodent is found in the Paraná and Uruguay river basins and in swamp regions of South America such as the Pantanal (the world's largest wetland).
One exceptional captive female specimen attained 113 kg (249 lb).
