The rarest lizard is the Jamaican iguana (Cyclura collei), a critically endangered species only rediscovered in 1990. With no more than 100 adult specimens existing, it is clinging to survival in southern Jamaica's remote Hellshire Hills, which is the only sizable area of primary dry forest remaining on the island but is under threat from charcoal burners.
