Leptotyphlops carlae, a species of threadsnake measuring 10 cm (4 in) long, was identified in Barbados by Dr. Blair Hedges (USA) in 2008.
The coiled snake is the size of a US quarter coin. The holotype (type specimen) of this new species weighed 0.6 g.
The 'new' species of threadsnake was officially described and named in 2008, but specimens of it had been known to science for many years before this, but had hitherto been misidentified as specimens of a closely related species. So the 'new' species was not discovered in 2008, it was described and named in 2008.
