The deepest sponges have been logged at depths of 9,990 m (32,776 ft) in the Philippine Trench, and belong to the genus Asbestopluma sp., of the family Cladorhizidae. The sponge was recorded by the research vessel Vityaz in 1975 and was cited by marine invertebrate specialist Dr Georgii Mikhailovich Belyaev in his 1989 publication Deep Sea Ocean Trenches and Their Fauna.
