The smallest known starfish is the asterinid sea star Parvulastra parvivipara discovered by Wolfgang Zeidler on the west coast of the Eyre peninsula, South Australia in 1975. It has a maximum radius of only 4.7 mm (0.18 in) and a diameter of less than 9 mm (0.35 in).
The species was formerly known as Patiriella parvivipara.
