Michel Hazanavicius’s The Artist (2011) had earned $105,530,649 (£67,484,965) at the worldwide box office as of March 2012, surpassing the record previously set by King Vidor’s ‘The Big Parade’ in 1925. Although it features a synchronised track of music and sound effects, The Artist closely follows the traditions and storytelling techniques of the silent era, making it an authentic modern silent film.
