The most Emmy Award nominations secured by a "freshman comedy" – that is, one in its debut season – is 20, for Ted Lasso (USA, Apple TV+/Doozer Productions, 2021), as announced by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences on 13 July 2021. The sports comedy-drama stars Jason Sudeikis as the titular American college football coach hired by a struggling English soccer team in a desperate attempt to reverse their fortunes.
