The first actor to win the "Best Actor" Oscar posthumously was Peter Finch (UK), who died on 14 January 1977 of a heart attack while promoting the film Network (USA, 1976), for which he had been nominated for the Oscar. The awards were held on 28 March 1977. In 2009, Heath Ledger (Australia, 1979–2008) became only the second person ever to win an acting Oscar after his death (for the role of The Joker in the 2008 blockbuster The Dark Knight, USA).
