On 23 November 2021, singer Billie Eilish (b. Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell) and her producer/engineer/mixer brother Finneas O’Connell (both USA) became the fifth and sixth individuals to notch up a consecutive hat-trick of Record of the Year nominations at the Grammys. “Bad Guy” and “Everything I Wanted” took the awards in 2020 and 2021, respectively, and “Happier than Ever” was nominated ahead of the 64th edition of the Grammy Awards on 3 April 2022. Previously, Post Malone (USA, b. Austin Post; 2019-21), Steve Winwood (UK; 1987-89), Roberta Flack (USA; 1973-75) and Frank Sinatra (USA; 1959-62) had achieved three (four in overall record holder Sinatra’s case) successive Record of the Year nods.

After winning Record of the Year in 2020-21, Eilish and O’Connell have the opportunity to break a tie with Roberta Flack (1973-74) and U2 (2001-02) and become the first artists to claim a consecutive hat-trick of awards in this category. Eilish would become the first female, and only the second solo artist after Paul Simon (1969, 1971 and 1988) - the first two as Simon & Garfunkel - to win as many as three Record of the Year awards. Mastering engineer Tom Coyne (2015-18) is the overall 'most wins' leader with four Record of the Year trophies, but engineer/mixer Tom Elmhirst (2008, 2012 and 2017) could match his achievement with a fourth triumph in 2022. Elmhirst's nomination is for Grammys favourite Brandi Carlile's "Right on Time".
