The largest opera house in the world by capacity is the Metropolitan Opera House at the Lincoln Center in New York, USA, with a total capacity of 3,975 – based on 3,800 seats and 175 standing room places. Officially opened on 16 September 1966 at a cost of $45.7 million, the opera house was designed by architect Wallace K. Harrison. The 9,011-m² (97,000-ft²) white travertine building contains a main stage measuring 27 m (90 ft) in depth and 31 m (103 ft) in width. The lobby also contains two murals by Marc Chagall.
