Steven Spielberg (USA) extended his record for the most Best Picture nominations for a producer to 13 when the romantic drama Maestro (USA, 2023) made the shortlist for the Oscars’ most prestigious award, as announced on 23 January 2024. Spielberg previously won the statuette in 1994 for Schindler’s List. Across five consecutive decades, Spielberg has also received nods for: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1983), The Color Purple (1986), Saving Private Ryan (1999), Munich (2006), Letters from Iwo Jima (2007), War Horse (2012), Lincoln (2013), Bridge of Spies (2016), The Post (2018), West Side Story (2022) and The Fabelmans (2023).

Should Maestro win Best Picture at the 96th Academy Awards on 10 March 2024, Spielberg will join a list of two-time category winners featuring the likes of Arthur Freed (1952 and 1959), Branko Lustig (1994 and 2001), Clint Eastwood (1993 and 2005) and Dede Gardner (2014 and 2017). Sam Spiegel (1955, 1958 and 1963) and Saul Zaentz (1976, 1985 and 1997) are both three-time Best Picture winners. The 24th Academy Awards (1952) was the first instance of Best Picture being awarded to the producer rather than the film studio.
