Jane Campion (New Zealand) landed her second Oscar nomination for Best Director when the “neo-Western psychodrama” The Power of the Dog (New Zealand/UK/USA/Greece/Australia, 2021) was shortlisted for the prize ahead of the 94th Academy Awards on 27 March 2022. Campion’s first Best Director nod was for The Piano (New Zealand/Australia/France, 1993), which was beaten to the award by Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List at the 66th Academy Awards on 21 March 1994.
Campion and Spielberg are nominated together again for Best Director in 2022, with The Power of the Dog going up against Spielberg’s re-make of West Side Story (USA, 2021), Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast and two other nominees in the hotly-contested category.
Although Campion missed out on Best Director in 1994, she did win Best Original Screenplay for The Piano – her only Oscar to date (as of the 93rd Academy Awards in 2021).
