The first legal seizure of cryptocurrency was made by the US Drug Enforcement Administration on 12 April 2013 when it confiscated 11.02 bitcoin (which then had a value of $814) from Eric Hughes of Charleston, South Carolina, who was accused of selling illegal drugs through the online marketplace Silk Road under the pseudonym "Casey Jones".

At the time of the arrest, Silk Road users noted that "Casey Jones" was a notably careless user of the heavily anonymized service, often casually giving away personal information to buyers and sellers.
