According to press reports of the time, on 6 September 1997 Jean-Michel Jarre was invited to Moscow to perform stage at Moscow State University in celebration of the 850th anniversary of the Russian city before a 500,000-strong audience assembled around the stage. Fans who were unable to get tickets for the concert gathered to the top of the surrounding hills to watch Jarre’s extraordinary sound-and-light show from a distance. It was estimated that this number was approximately 3 million people.
