The first tradeable NFTs were launched as part of the game Cryptokitties on 28 November 2017. The game, which allows players to purchase, "breed" and trade virtual cats, was created by Dapper Labs (CAN).
The first experiments with NFTs were technical demonstrations or novelties (like the Terra Nullius NFT). They were not assigned any value or intended to be traded on the market. Although they are associated today with trade, NFTs are not necessarily commodities. They can be used as a cryptographically secure means of authenticating anything – physical or digital assets or any document or certificate, such as a legal contract or a college degree.
The CryptoKitties, by contrast, were intentionally created as commodities, designed to be bought and sold as part of the associated game.
