The first Winter Olympic gold medallist (female) is Herma Szabo-Plank (Austria), who won the ladies’ figure skating on 29 January 1924 in Chamonix, France.
The first Winter Olympic Games was held in 1924 and was originally known as Semaine Internationale des Sports d'Hiver (“International Winter Sports Week”). For the ladies’ individual figure skating, Szabo-Plank took to the ice in a short skirt to aid movement – a pioneering move that would later be misattributed to Szabo-Plank’s rival, Sonja Henie, who finished last in 1924 at the age of 11.
