The French fashion designer Yves (-Mathieu) Saint-Laurent (b.1936), who became Christian Diors assistant at the age of 17, was named head of the House of Dior at Diors death in 1957.  In 1962, he opened his own fashion house and in the 1970s expanded into ready-to-wear lines, household linens and fragrances.
