The largest ever visual effect was created by Weta Digital, now Wētā FX, for under the surface of Planet Ego in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017). A planet hollow area, intended to be 8 kilometres across, made by the visual effects studio for a sequence set inside the planet, required the rendering of 361 billion ‘de-instanced’ polygons. Wētā FX relied on fractals and Mandelbulb research and development to help realise this massive visual effect.
