Who
Seychelles sheath-tailed bat, Coleura seychellensis
Where
Seychelles
When
April 2016

The Seychelles sheath-tailed bat (Coleura seychellensis) had an estimated population size of 50–100 mature individuals as of April 2016 (though this had dipped to as low as 30 individuals in the mid-1990s). The species is found in caves and forests on three islands in the Seychelles. It was relatively abundant until the 1970s, and populations may have declined by more than 90% because of deforestation, human disturbance and via impacts of invasive plant species.

The Seychelles sheath-tailed bat is currently listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN.

The last individual of the Christmas Island pipistrelle (Pipistrellus murrayi) was recorded in 2009, and the species is now deemed extinct following an 80% population decline between 1994 and 2005.
