The heaviest colossal squid ever caught was an adult male colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni) weighing approximately 495 kilograms (1,091 pounds) and measuring 4.2 metres (13 feet 9 inches) long. It was caught by fishermen on board the San Aspiring in the Ross Sea of Antarctica, and taken to New Zealand's Te Papa Natural History Museum for research, where the catch was announced on 22 February 2007.
Colossal squids are usually shorter than giant squid, but much heavier.
