Peter Finch (Australia, b. UK, 1916-77) won five BAFTA film awards, all for Best Actor in a Leading Role (formerly Best British Actor): A Town Like Alice (UK/Australia, 1956), The Trials of Oscar Wilde (UK, 1960), No Love for Johnnie (UK, 1961), Sunday Bloody Sunday (UK, 1971) and Network (USA, 1976). The comedy-drama Network premiered on 27 November 1976 – just two months before his death on 14 January 1977, at the age of 60. Network earned Finch a posthumous Best Actor award at the 49th Academy Awards on 28 March 1977, and the British Academy Film Awards followed suit in 1978 as Finch was recognised for portraying the fictional TV newscaster Howard Beale in the “perfectly outrageous” production.

Finch was a seven-time BAFTA nominee, receiving Best British Actor nods for Windom’s Way (UK, 1957) and The Nun’s Story (USA, 1959) in addition to his five Best Actor wins.
