A first-round match between defending champion and No.2 seed Alexander Zverev and Jenson Brooksby at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel (Mexican Open) in Acapulco finished at 4:55 am local time on 22 February 2022. The match, which began at 1:35 am at Arena GNP Seguros, was won in 3 hours 20 minutes by Zverev, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2. The second set alone – featuring a tie-break that went to 12-10 in the German’s favour – lasted 1 hour 51 minutes.

The very-late-night encounter between Zverev and Brooksby beat the previous latest finish to a professional tennis match – and still the latest finish to a Grand Slam match – by 21 minutes: at the Australian Open in 2008, Top 20 seeds Lleyton Hewitt and Marcos Baghdatis battled it out over five sets in a third-round marathon that concluded at 4:34 am on Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena.
