The highest inhabited buildings in the world are those in the border fort of Basisi by the Mana Pass (Lat. 31º04'N, Long. 79º24'E) at c. 6,000 m (19,700 ft), which is manned by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (India). Because of lower air pressures at high altitudes and the corresponding decrease in the amount of oxygen in each breath taken, many people begin to feel the effects of altitude sickness at heights above 2,500 m (8,200 ft). It would take several days to acclimatise to the altitude at Basisi and most people would become very ill if they were airlifted directly to that height.
