The first cloud tank shot in a feature film was made by Scott Squires, under the supervision of Douglas Trumbull, for Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). Cloud tanks were used in feature films for several years to make 'cloudy skies' or alien-like mysterious environments using layers of salt water, fresh water, and injected paint or ink. The final look of billowing clouds occurs when the paint disperses in the water.
