Novak Djokovic (Serbia) has been named tennis’ male Player of the Year a record eight times, in 2011–12, 2014–15, 2018, 2020–21 and 2023. Since 1990, Player of the Year – officially ATP Year-End No.1 presented by Pepperstone – has been awarded exclusively to the man finishing the calendar year as the No.1-ranked player on the ATP Tour. It was first presented – to Arthur Ashe – in 1975, and has subsequently been won by the likes of Björn Borg (1976–80), Pete Sampras (1993–98), Roger Federer (2004–07 and 2009) and Rafael Nadal (2008, 2010, 2013, 2017 and 2019).

Highlights of Djokovic’s 2023 season included the latest three of his unrivalled 24 Grand Slam singles titles (Australian Open, French Open and US Open) and a final at the fourth major of the year (Wimbledon), plus a record-extending 40th Masters title, beating Grigor Dimitrov in the Paris Masters final in France on 5 November.

Djokovic is the oldest man to end a calendar year as the ATP’s top-ranked player – aged 36 years 174 days on 12 November 2023, when he beat Holger Rune in his opening match at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin, Italy, to confirm his No.1 status – and it will take him beyond 400 weeks at No.1 in the Pepperstone ATP rankings. As of the week beginning 13 November 2023, he had spent a total of 399 weeks at No.1 since 4 July 2011.

The equivalent award for the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Tour was won eight times by Steffi Graf (1987–90 and 1993–96) and seven times by Martina Navratilova (1978–79 and 1982–86) and Serena Williams (2002, 2008–09 and 2012–15).
