The hardest bouldering problems climbed are "Burden of Dreams" in Lappnor, Finland, and "Return of the Sleepwalker" in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Nevada, USA. Both are graded as V17, the highest difficulty rating. They have each only been climbed once; "Burden of Dreams" by Nalle Hukkataival (FIN) on 23 October 2016, and "Return of the Sleepwalker" by Daniel Woods (USA) on 30 March 2021.
Bouldering entails rock climbing without ropes, usually on routes that rise no higher than 15 to 20 feet above the ground. Climbers typically use crash mats and spotters for safety. This discipline of rock climbing, by shortening the distance, places an emphasis on executing the hardest sequences of moves possible – puzzle-like arrangements of holds known as "problems" rather than "routes". Grades range from V0 at the low end of the scale, to V17 at the top.
