A synagogue dating back to between 50 and 75 years B.C was unearthed by
archaeologist Ehud Netzer's team in 1998. The remains of the synagogue were dicovered beneath the ruins of the Hasmonean winter palace built by King Herod. The synagogue was destroyed by an earthquake in 31 B.C.E. (Before Common Era).
