The most full extension punches in three minutes (II) is 209, and was achieved by Pekka Luodeslampi (Finland) in Vantaa, Uusimaa, Finland, on 12 March 2022.
Pekka loves boxing and his favourite types of challenges are striking records. As a child, he has been inspired by Guinness World Records (GWR) and started off watching other people make attempts. He has a vivid memory from the year 2000, when a Finnish boxer named Sami Elovaara punched ten CRT TV sets at the Finnish GWR TV show. He became besotted with people using their combat skills to become legends. Anyone can have a go and there is a path for every skill set. Pekka says that "Even if you don't achieve the record, you are still a winner because you have defeated the most time consuming opponent of life; The mind. With personal doubts, fears and so on. Growing as a person and seeing yourself improve in all aspects of life. That is a truly personal record and if you can be 'Officially Amazing' while doing so, that is the perfect mix and something to cherish."
Pekka has been trying to improve his punching bag skills for years. When he found that he was able to apply for an impairment striking record, he knew it was the right move for him. In further detail, he explains: "I am a 'Sluggernaut' in essence. My boxing is not based on fancy and highly respectable skill of technique. I punch with passion. "Master of Momentum" heavy handed torrent of blows. Because my motor skills and perception are inhibited in a way (For example, I have hard time putting shirt on even, it tends to end with wrong side up and buttons, shoelaces and so on. Stairs are very hard and biking/skating impossible) I punch in wide sweeping motions, like a flail. Similar as a boxing slugger. Thanks to the Guinness World Records impairments records, I could be the slugger. With no need to regulate my power or motions needed to rapid fire back and forth straights, the 'sluggering' had been awaken! Going with the haymaker type of momentum punches no matter which type, yes they are full extension punches like regular straights but they carry great deal of unbridled mass behind them..."
Pekka then describes his training routine outside of boxing in detail: "Walking 20-30 thousand steps per day or more. One daily hourly walk outside, also doing step up aerobics training while outdoors (Step climb set of 20 reps.).
I weigh around 293 lbs. so training methods need to be suitable for a heavyweight slugger. Doing various body weight training. I have challenges with stiffness both range of motion and muscles so part of training is just for relaxation purposes to unlock my full potential. Fun fact: I still use Xbox 360 Kinect in my training!"
When asked about any issues that Pekka faced with the attempt, he explained that he had to really push himself and go beyond what he thought was possible. His muscles weren't hurting enough to stop him but he was very out of breath and to take regular short breaks during the attempt. When the attempt was over, he could barely stand and speak and had to begin with baby steps as he had truly given it his all. In total, it took around six whole days for him to completely recover from the attempt.
Pekka explains his final words around the attempt: "Thanks to all my friends and team/audience, your contribution was immeasurable. They worked so hard both at practical issues and encouragement."
"When somebody attempts a record, it is a journey. They are a person challenging themselves, and when others see it they can also be inspired to take their journey head on, record or not a record. Everybody faces obstacles, challenges and so on. The thought: "If he can do this and have fun while doing it, so can I!”"
