The first female Space Shuttle pilot was Eileen Collins (USA), who was selected as the pilot of STS-63 mission to the Mir space station. The Shuttle Discovery lifted off on 3 February 1995, and returned to Earth on 11 February 1995.
Colonel Eileen Collins joined the NASA astronaut corps from the US Air Force, where she was a test pilot. She would go on to pilot STS-84 in 1997 and later became the first commander of a Space Shuttle mission on STS-93. Her last spaceflight was as commander of STS-114 in 2005.
