Stosur joined 2000 gold medallist Williams on five appearances at the delayed Tokyo 2021 Games, where she lost 6-4, 6-2 in Round 1 to Kazakhstan’s semi-finalist Yelena Rybakina. One male player has also lined up in the singles draw at five Olympics: Taiwan’s Lu Yen-hsun (2004-21).
Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, Spain’s 14-time Grand Slam winner, also went to five Olympics (1988-2004) but only played doubles in 2004. She won singles bronze in 1992 and silver in 1996.
At Tokyo 2021, Stosur became the first tennis player to represent Australia at five Olympic Games.
