Between 18 June 2014 and 4 December 2021, Dustin Reynolds (USA), aka the "Single-handed Sailor", completed an around-the-world journey by sail, starting and ending in his home state of Hawaii, USA. He travelled west via the South Pacific, Australia, south-east Asia, Madagascar, South Africa, the Caribbean, the eastern USA and through the Panama Canal to return to the Pacific Ocean. The first part of the journey was sailed in an Alberg 35 sloop named Rudis; in Thailand, he exchanged this for a Bristol 35.5 called Tiama.

Reynolds had his left arm and leg amputated in 2008 after he was knocked off his motorcycle by a drunk driver.

He was inspired to take on this challenge - despite having no ocean sailing experience! - after reading about other solo sailors who completed journeys around the world. After facing financial difficulties after his accident, he decided to sell his fishing boat and with the money bought a sailboat. Originally, the trip was intended to take five years, but ended up stretching to 7.5 years because of boat problems and COVID restrictions.

The route was as follows: 1. Hawaii, USA 2. Palmyra, Northern Line Islands 3. Tabuaeran/Fanning Island, Kiribati 4. American Samoa 5. Tonga 6. Fiji 7. Vanuatu 8. Solomon islands 9. Luisade Islands 10. Papua New Guinea 10. Thursday Island/Darwin, Australia 11. Indonesia 12. Malaysia 13. Thailand 14. Andaman Islands, India 15. Sri Lanka 16. Chagos Islands 17. Madagascar 18.
