In eight matches at the seventh edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, held in the United Arab Emirates and Oman in October/November 2021, Sri Lanka’s legbreak bowler, Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva, took 16 wickets at an average of 9.75 runs per wicket. The Galle-born all-rounder, 24, who made his T20 International debut in September 2019, claimed at least one wicket in all but one of the eight matches he played at the 2021 tournament, with his best performances coming against the Netherlands on 22 October (3 for 9 off 3 overs) and England on 1 November (3 for 21 off 4 overs).
Hasaranga claimed one more scalp than compatriot Ajantha Mendis, whose 15 wickets at the 2012 tournament included 6 for 8 off 4 overs against Zimbabwe at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota, Sri Lanka, on 18 September 2012 – the best bowling figures in a men’s T20 International match at the time.
