The `skewer' or `spit' (from the Greek obeliskos) of Tuthmosis III brought from Aswan, Egypt by Emperor Constantius in the spring of AD 357 was repositioned in the Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano, Rome, Italy on 3 Aug 1588. Once 36 m (118 ft 1 in) tall, the obelisk now stands 32.81 m (107 ft 7 in) and weighs 455 tonnes.
