The most money raised by charity walk by an amputee is Can $14.7 million (US$12.3 million / £5.4 million) by Terry Fox (Canada), who, with an artificial leg, ran from St John's, Newfoundland to Thunder Bay, Ontario, in 143 days, from 12 April to 2 September 1980.
Terry, who had had his right leg amputated just above the knee due to bone cancer at the age of 18, covered over 5,000 km (3,100 miles) to raise funds for cancer research. Although his journey was cut short due to illness, he was able to raise a further Can $10 million through a telethon organised by the CTV television network.
Terry passed away on 28 June 1981, aged 22. His legacy, the annual Terry Fox Run, is the largest one-day cancer research fundraising event. Each year, more than 1.2 million people participate and to date, it has raised a reported Can $850 million.
