On 29 September 2008, the DJIA suffered a loss of 777.68 points, the largest one-day drop in its history. A dive of over 700 points was recorded shortly before 2 p.m. when the US Congress began to vote on the federal government's $700 billion (£482 billion) "bail-out bill" to protect the financial markets - and the tax payers.
