The first mid-air triple somersault, probably from catcher to catcher, was performed by the young Latvian aerialist Lena Jordan, of the Flying Jordans (an American troupe) in 1896, at Koster & Bial’s Theatre in New York City, USA. Lena Jordan was sixteen then. The trick has been described (albeit in a confuse manner) by Australian journalists who witnessed it the following year. It seems that Lena was thrown from a high position under the cupola down to the hands of her catcher, Lew Jordan, who was hanging from a trapeze.
