Established in 1986, the Marathon des Sables is an annual six-day ultramarathon through the Sahara Desert in southern Morocco covering a distance of 251 km (156 mi) - approximately the same as six regular marathons. The first amputee to complete the race was former British Army Officer Chris Moon (UK), who lost his right arm and leg when overseeing the clearing of a minefield in Mozambique in 1995. Incredibly, he took part in the Marathon des Sables the following year in April 1996.

The first female amputee to complete the Marathon des Sables was ultrarunner Amy Palmiero-Winters (USA), whose left leg had to be amputated after a motorcycle accident in 1994. She ran the desert ultramarathon in 2019.

The first double leg amputee to complete the race was ex-RAF platoon sergeant Duncan Slater (UK) in 2017; Duncan lost his legs in 2009 while serving with the British Army in Afghanistan.
