Temperate forests are the most seriously affected by acid precipitation (acid rain), atmospheric fallout of industrial pollution. The Czech Republic has the greatest damage to forests caused by acid rain: 71% of the country's forests are affected.
The problem is particularly acute in northern Bohemia as a result of pollution from the large quantities of fossil fuels burned by the neighbouring industries of the former East Germany and of southern Poland (Silesia).
