The loudest noise ever recorded was produced when the island-volcano Krakatoa, in the Sunda Strait between Sumatra and Java, Indonesia, exploded in an eruption on 27 August 1883. The sound was heard 5,000 km (3,100 miles) away. The noise is estimated to have been heard over 8% of the Earth's surface and is estimated to have had 26 times the power of the largest ever H-bomb test.
