The Italian city of Venice (population 321,000 in the municipality in 1995 but under 100,000 on the islands) is the most frequently flooded town on Earth. Early in the 20th century venice flooded four or five times a year; by 1989 the number of flood days had increased to 40. By 1998 the squares and streets were flooded one day in three when wooden walkways are the only means by which St Mark's Square can be crossed. The problem is likely to become more severe: in the next 50 years it is estimated that the water level at Venice will rise by 20.3 cm 8 in.
