Worst avalanche disaster - most people trapped

At least 265 people died and over 45,000 were trapped on 20 January 1951 during the "Winter of Terror", when a series of avalanches, caused by a combination of hurricane-force winds and wet snow overlaying powder snow, thundered through the Swiss, Austrian and Italian Alps.
