The most gold medals won at the World Puzzle Championships by a team is 15, by the USA. With an additional eight silver and five bronze, US teams have taken home a record 28 medals in the competition's 29-year history, behind Germany with 17 medals (eight gold, six silver and three bronze) and Japan with 16 (two gold, eight silver and six bronze).

Teams are limited to four players. The USA was victorious in the inaugural event, held in New York City in 1992, then went on to win in 1995–96, 1998–2001 (a record consecutive four wins), 2004, 2006–08, 2010–11, 2013 and 2019. The 2020 and 2021 events were cancelled owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event is organized by the World Puzzle Federation, an association of countries (one organization per country) that "provides means for an international exchange of puzzle ideas, stimulates innovation in the field of puzzles, and fosters friendships among puzzle enthusiasts worldwide".
