Starring Disney's iconic mascot, the first Disney-themed videogame was eponymously titled Mickey Mouse (Nintendo) and was released in Japan on a Wide Screen Game & Watch handheld on 9 October 1981.

The game involved Mickey catching falling eggs that rolled down two slopes; those not caught smashed and released a chick which then walked off screen. As the game progresses, the speed and number of eggs ramp up.

The first Disney platform videogame, meanwhile, was 1988's Mickey Mousecapade for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The mouse-branded side-scroller cleared a path for future Disney platform classics such as Duck Tales (1989), Chip 'n Dale's Rescue Rangers (1990) and Castle of Illusion: Starring Mickey Mouse (1990), to name just a few.
