The longest span for a stressed ribbon bridge is 150 m (492 ft), a record shared by the Plovdiv Footbridge, a cycle/pedestrian bridge in Plovdiv, Bulgaria opened 1989 (with three spans of 48m, 150m and 48m) and the Mkhomazi (Umkomaas) River Pedestrian Bridge in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, which opened in November 2005. Both are made from prestressed concrete.

A stressed ribbon bridge is a bit like a simple suspension bridge (i.e. a rope bridge), but with the suspension cables embedded in the deck which follows a catenary arch between supports. The cables can then be stressed which adds stiffness and prevents the sway commonly associated with simple suspension spans. The first ever was the Lionel Viera Bridge across the Maldonado River in southern Uruguay, opened in 1965. Stressed ribbon bridges can be very slender.
